Seminar on "Trending microbiology techniques offered at laboratory of food and biological engineering department"

Laboratory of Algal research at Jiangsu University is well-equipped; here, we research novel, innovative microalgae production processes. Biofuels, particularly algal-based biofuels, and the growth of microalgae using strategies that promote the microalgae's capacity for effective CO2 fixation are at the forefront of global efforts to create renewable energy and sequester CO2. China, the greatest developing nation in the world, is pursuing the development of a variety of renewable energy sources. Utilizing both eukaryotic algae and cyanobacteria, the Algal laboratory focuses primarily on the strategic development of both fundamental and practical elements of algal biology. Algae-related study issues include resources and systematics, biofuel, freshwater ecology, and any other strategic and fundamental scientific questions. A variety of national talent initiatives are working with the laboratory's team. Their study subjects include algal biology, genetics, systematics, biotechnology, environmental biology, algal resources, toxicity, algae from harsh climates, the mechanism of bloom development of toxic cyanobacteria, and the generation of biofuel derived from algae, among several other valuable substances.

In the third seminar to be held on 16th November 2022, two Post-doc members of FBE (Dr. Jamila Akhtar Tuly and Dr. Ameer Ali Kubar) will present their research activities and their success stories in joining the Jiangsu University. The speakers will address the following perspectives in their presentations:

· Strain development using different radiation sources.

· Microbial fermentation to improve peptide production using waste materials as substrates.

· Developing novel techniques to increase CO2 fixation using microalgae.

. Designing novel photobioreactors to strengthen mixing and mass-transfer for achieving higher biomass yield.

Short biographies of the speakers


Dr. Jamila Akhter Tuly is currently working as a postdoctoral researcher at the School of Food and Biological Engineering, Jiangsu University, Zhenjiang, China. She previously received her Ph.D. in Food Science and Engineering from Jiangsu University (December 2021). She has completed BSc (Hons.) in Agriculture from Patuakhali Science & Technology University, Patuakhali, Bangladesh, and MSc in Horticulture from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Her main research focus is on microbial fermentation, particularly strain development using different radiation mutagens, liquid and solid-state fermentation, and non-thermal physical treatment: ultrasound, magnetic field. She has received the “Excellent Postdoctoral Talent award 2022” from Jiangsu Funding Program.

Dr. Ameer Ali Kubar is currently working as a Post-doc researcher at the School of Food and Biological Engineering, Jiangsu University, Zhenjiang, China. As a Doctorate in Energy and Environmental Engineering graduate, he possesses strong interest in microalgae cultivation. He has graduated from Zhejiang university in Top 50 QS world ranking and Top 5 in China, he is currently working as a full-time post-doc researcher at Jiangsu university, China, where his focused research is about developing novel photobioreactors. He has successfully won “Excellent Postdoctoral Talent award 2022”, and published his work with some well-known Journals including Bioresource Technology, Journal of CO2 utilization, Science of The Total Environment, ACS Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, and ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering. Research profile, Publications = 18, Impact Factor > 150, Citations = 159, H-Index = 9, H10- Index = 6. He is also engaged in teaching undergraduate students about the lab experiments related to enhancing the performance of novel photobioreactors. In addition, he has a tremendous experience of completing projects in Large-scale microalgae industries. He has worked and stayed in the field for multiple times at one of the largest microalgae industries at Ordos, Inner Mongolia, China around the year during my PhD. Specifically, his research is focused on increasing mixing and mass-transfer throughout photobioreactors, as these are the most important factors in order to achieve higher biomass yield and CO2 fixation.
